Training your bot with documents

2 min read

AI Doc Summarizer Doc Summary

Training your bot allows it to understand and answer questions using your own content.

This is done directly inside the chatbot creation flow and can be updated at any time.

Where training happens #

When creating a chatbot, Step 4: Train lets you add training sources.

You can also revisit training later:

  1. Go to Smart Bots → AI Bots
  2. Hover over your chatbot
  3. Click the three dots (⋯)
  4. Select Train

This opens the same training interface.

What you can train with #

You can train your bot using multiple content types:

Website #

  • Add a single URL
  • Fetch pages automatically
  • Select which pages to include
  • Train only the pages you want

This is ideal for:

  • Help centers
  • Feature pages
  • Pricing pages
  • Documentation

Documents (PDF) #

  • Upload PDF files
  • Use manuals, guides, or policies
  • The bot learns from the document content

Text #

  • Paste plain text
  • Useful for short explanations or internal notes
  • Quick way to add custom knowledge

Q&A #

  • Add direct question-and-answer pairs
  • Best for:
    • Very specific questions
    • Exact phrasing
    • Critical answers

Training process #

  1. Add one or more sources
  2. Select what should be included
  3. Click Train GPT
  4. Wait until sources are marked as Trained

Each source can be:

  • Re-trained
  • Removed
  • Updated later

Important notes #

  • Training is optional but highly recommended
  • Training improves accuracy and relevance
  • At least one text-embedding model must have available credits
  • Training does not affect the Knowledge Base (they are separate)

Training vs Knowledge Base (quick difference) #

  • Training → background knowledge for the bot
  • Knowledge Base → public, structured help content

Both can be used together for best results.

Best practices #

  • Train only relevant pages
  • Avoid duplicate or outdated content
  • Keep sources focused
  • Update training when content changes

Summary #

  • Training happens in Step 4: Train
  • You can revisit training anytime via the chatbot menu
  • Supports websites, PDFs, text, and Q&A
  • Improves how your bot understands and answers questions

Training your bot with documents turns it from a generic assistant into a content-aware AI that speaks with context and confidence.
